Wednesday

- Usability guidelines - what are they and who makes them ?
- Presentation of http://usability.gov and (shortly!) of its guidelines via our Research-Based Web Design & Usability Guidelines (summary)
- Using usability guidelines in guidelines-based reviews (short definition and extra resources)
- Alternatives to guidelines-based reviews, there are many (!), e.g.
- Administration
- Evaluation (homework, exams, participation,...)
- Classroom activities (guidelines-based reviews of European Webster sites)
- Download the an Excel workbook containing all 247 web usability guidelines from userfocus
- Analyze http://www.webster.ch (and maybe its sister sites) according to instructions. We will divide work in groups...
This activity prepares homework 1.
Homework
Do a partial guidelines review of
- http://www.webster.ch (Webster Geneva)
The instructor will assign tasks to various students or groups
Students can work in teams of max. 2 for this homework.
- 1 student = does the homepage plus one other item (as agreed upon with the instructor)
- 2 students = do the homepage plus 3 other items (as agreed upon with the instructor)
Folks who didn't attend the Wednesday class, should try to do the best to catch up ....
- download an Excel workbook containing all 247 web usability guidelines ... and start working on it (as above)
Results will be discussed in week 3.
Due: Wednesday, week 2 before start of class
Evaluation criteria
- Completeness (but don't fill in items that are not appropriate for webster.ch
- Quality of comments
- Delivering in time
