Définition

« Between formal propositional knowledge and embodied skill lies ‘interactional ex- pertise’ – the ability to converse expertly about a practical skill or expertise, but without being able to practice it, learned through linguistic socialisation among the practitioners.» (Collins, H. 2004)

Harry Collins -un sociologue quoi a étudié les physiciens des ondes gravitationnelles a réalisé une expérience où des physiciens du domaine devaient distinguer dans les réponses à des questions (établies par des physiciens) les réponses de vrais physiciens et celles qui ne le seraient pas. Sur neuf chercheurs 7 n'ont pas pu choisir et 2 ont choisi celles établies par Collins. Usages

Collins says this kind of expertise, known asInteractional to contrast with the ‘contributory expertise’ that comes from being able to do experiments and develop theories, should not be dismissed. He points out, for example, that it is important in activities such as grant allocation, in which peer-review panels may include scientists who know the concepts associated with a field, but lack technical understanding.
