COAP 2170 Week 1 program
Monday
- Presentation of the course outcomes, (provisional syllabus) and student evaluation scheme

- Bill Verplank on Interaction Design (2:46 min., YouTube)
- The 'Mom Test' for Website Usability Testing with Matt Bailey
- Chicken and Egg by Kai Brunner (3 min., Vimeo)
- Demo Usability Test by Steve Krug, Author of "Don't make me think!" (only if time left, else on week 2 !)
- Big pictures - Interaction Design vs User Experience Design vs User Interface design vs Usability etc.
- The elements of user experience by Jesse James Garrett, author of The Elements of User Experience
- The Disciplines of User Experience, a revised diagram from the Designing for Interaction book by Dan Saffer

Wednesday
- Short presentations
- Usability guidelines - what are they and who makes them ?
- Presentation of http://usavility.gov and (shortly!) its guidelines.
- Using usability guidelines in guidelines-based reviews (short definition and extra resources)
- Alternatives to guidelines-based reviews, there are many (!), e.g.
- Classroom activities (guidelines-based reviews of European Webster sites)
- Download the an Excel workbook containing all 247 web usability guidelines from userfocus
- Analyze http://www.webster.ch according to instructions.
Homework
Do a partial guidelines review of either:
- http://www.webster.ch (Webster Geneva)
- http://www.webster.ac.at/ (Webster Austria)
- http://www.webster.nl/ (Webster Leiden)
The instructor will assign tasks to various students or groups
Students can work in teams of max. 2 for this homework.
- 1 student = does the homepage plus one other item
- 2 students = do the homepage plus 3 other items
