Definition
A personal research and teaching environment (PRTE) is an environment for research and teaching that is under the control of a researcher/teacher, e.g. a university lecturer.
The PRTR is the equivalent of the personal learning environment (PLE), but PTRRs also can implement Participatory learning environment, i.e. let students participate in knowledge construction or become the scholar's electronic portfolio. In other words we coined this term to describe individual web-based multi-purpose work environments.
Tools
Like Personal learning environments, PRTEs can be implemented with a variety of tools, e.g.
- Portalware, e.g. a system like Drupal
- Blogs. Often researchers-teachers will then use more than one blog, e.g. one blog for teaching and another for a given course.
- Wikis, e.g. a Mediawiki like this wiki that is sort of becoming the PRTE of Daniel K. Schneider, e.g. read EduTech Wiki - an all-in-one solution to support whole scholarship?
- Webtops like Pageflakes
- Social networking software, like Ning
Questions
- How to integrated these with institutional websites, e.g. LMSs or campus stystem
- How to work with colleagues that have their own.
- How to articulate teaching with personal learning environments
- How to integrate with various services (including the above, if there are service APIs)
