Introduction

An immersive virtual environment is a software environment where the user(s) experience some kind of physical "presence". We therefor can distinguish several types of these environments:

Non-immersive virtual realities or virtual environments are not part of this category.

The difference between virtual, mixed and augmented realities are usually defined as follows:

  • In a virtual reality, the users are fully immersed in the software environment and do not interact with the real world.
  • In an augmented reality, virtual objects are overlayed over the real world.
  • In mixed reality overlayed objects are anchored in the real world. E.g. when a used manipulates an object in the real world it can affect the virtual environment.
