According to Wikipedia, “Google Classroom is a free web service developed by Google for schools that aim to simplify creating, distributing and grading assignments in a paperless way. The primary purpose of Google Classroom is to streamline the process of sharing files between teachers and students.” (retrieved May 2, 2019).

“Classroom is designed to help teachers create and collect assignments paperlessly, including time-saving features like the ability to automatically make a copy of a Google Document for each student. It also creates Drive folders for each assignment and for each student to help keep everyone organized. Students can keep track of what’s due on the Assignments page and begin working with just a click. Teachers can quickly see who has or hasn't completed the work, and provide direct, real-time feedback and grades right in Classroom.” Introducing Classroom, retrieved Aug 13 2014.

One also could qualify google classroom as a light-weight learning management system. Other big vendors develop similar software, all with certain advantages and certain disadvantages, e.g. Google has privacy issues and Apple requires strongly proprietary hardware.
