A student model is a representation within the architecture of an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) or intelligent learning environment (ILE) of a student's understanding of material being taught. The student model is built through a students interaction within an ILE and is used by the ILE to adapt the student model accordingly and deliver appropriate instruction for the individual student, completing a “student modelling loop” (Brusilovsky, 1994).

This model may also be used as a cognitive tool by being made explicit to learners. See Open learner model.
