Le Simulation & Gaming se réfère à une série de conceptions pédagogiques qui utilisent des éléments de simulation et des jeux. Ces simulations et jeux peut être faits avec des jeux de société, être assistée par ordinateur, utiliser des jeux de société ou des environnements entièrement informatisés.

La revue Simulation & Gaming: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Theory, Practice and Research (S&G) (5/2014) définit Simulation/jeu de façon très large. Elle englobe des domaines tels que la simulation, simulation informatique, simulation internet, jeu, simulation/jeux, jeux sérieux, jeux éducatifs, jeux de formation, jeux électroniques, jeux internet, jeux vidéo, exercices de la politique, des simulations jour-dans-la-vie, des exercices de planification, compte rendu, la discussion analytique, l'analyse post-expérience, modélisation, réalité virtuelle, la théorie des jeux, des jeux de rôle, jeux de rôle, jeu, l'apprentissage actif, l'apprentissage expérientiel, l'apprentissage de l'expérience, les jouets, la réalité augmentée, "playthings", des exercices structurés, jeux éducatifs, jeux à des fins de remplacement, ludo-éducatif, l'apprentissage numérique basée sur le jeu, l'apprentissage immersif, jeux de réflexion, jeux d'impact social, des jeux pour le changement, des jeux pour de bonnes conditions d'apprentissage synthétiques, environnements pour tâches synthétiques.

Dans ce texte nous définition simulation & gaming de façon plus restrictive comme une forme de jeu et de simulation assistée par ordinateur qui s'intéresse à des processus qui impliquent fortement des acteurs humains. Le participant doit apprendre à gérer des processus et des ressources en interaction avec d'autres participants, donc il y a une dimension decicision et jeu de rôle qui se joue dans un monde "simulé" (par ordinateur ou pas). Ce type de design est particulièrement populaire dans la formation commerciale . Selon Hall (2011), les simulations d'entreprises ou jeux d’entreprise remontent à 1957, quand un groupe à la Rand Corporation (Bellman et al , 1957) a créé ce qui est peut-être le premier jeu d'entreprise informatisé (simulation)".
